The Republic of Turkey has become the 129th country to ratify the Kigali Amendment to phase down HFCs on 10 November 2021. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances was adopted at the 28th Meeting of the Parties held in Kigali, Rwanda in October 2016.
The Amendment will enter into force for Turkey on 8 February 2022.
Agreed by all 197 parties to the Montreal Protocol in October 2016, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol commits countries to cut the production and consumption of HFCs by more than 80% over the next 30 years. It is estimated that a global implementation of the Kigali Amendment would prevent up to 80 billion tonnes CO2 equivalent of emissions by 2050.
